The iconic 46-year-old fireballer was on the mound for the home team, and the 26-year-old up-start third baseman was at the plate for the visitors. In the third inning, he decided to send a message to the young slugger. He threw a fastball that hit hit right in the arm, and that’s when all hell broke loose. Ryan saw him coming and calmly dropped his glove and waited for him. As Ventura got close, Ryan grabbed him by the head and put him in a headlock. Then he started pounding him, like a cowboy punching a steer. Ventura was helpless. He couldn’t get out of Ryan’s grip, and he couldn’t fight back. He just took punch after punch, while Ryan looked like he was having the time of his life.
The umpires sorted out the mess, and guess what? Ryan was not ejected from the game. He had the right to defend himself, they said. Ventura, on the other hand, was ejected, along with his manager. That was the only hitter Ryan hit that year
